What I Do

A responsive website is a must have these days now that more mobiles and tablets are used to access websites than desktops. Add to that Google’s announcement that they will favour mobile-friendly websites in their algorithms and you have a compelling argument for upgrading your website to responsive.

A responsive design serves content to the user based on the size of the device they are viewing on, and if i’m being honest it’s one of my favourite aspects of this job 🙂

I have a wealth of experience developing online shops for clients, in particular with WooCommerce and OpenCart, amongst other PHP driven open source shopping cart solutions.

One of my most recent ecommerce projects involved the daily management of a shop for a professional rugby team. Freebies!!

Ensuring your website is standards compliant is important to ensure it loads faster, displays correctly on more devices, and is accessible to users with disabilities.

I have extensive experience building Local Government websites which must adhere to very strict guidelines.

In terms of my design ‘style’: I’ve always thought of my design style as clean & user-friendly and i think my portfolio reflects that both in terms of the front end and the back-end programming underpinning it all.

I believe in creating websites that are:

  • Visually stunning and give a great first impression.
  • Intuitive & consistent for visitors
Clean & uncluttered (less is more!)
  • Accessible & standards compliant
  • Search Engine Friendly

20 years experience of designing, building and maintaining websites on a daily basis has given me a solid grasp of the do’s and don’ts when it comes to increasing your websites visibility with search engines.

Obtaining high rankings involves keyword research, good coding practice, relevant and well written content, monitoring of progress and a wee bit of patience.

Sustainability is as an important consideration with every project I undertake.

It may make only a wee bit of difference but I try to reduce my carbon footprint and energy use where possible.

I travel to meetings through public transport, and favour local suppliers who demonstrate a commitment to the environment.

I also strive to minimise waste through reuse and recycling.

I specialise in all things WordPress. and have been developing websites on the platform on a daily basis since 2010. Most projects involve a fully responsive custom theme design and build, often with some plugin customisation or ecommerce functionality.

I enjoy building from the ground up with a skeletal framework. Starting with the bare minimum allows you to build in only the functionality you you require and results in a faster, less bloated website.

If you have a WordPress theme you want to work with, I have a great deal of experience customising and developing with many of the top selling themes on the Envato marketplace.

I provide many clients with a specialised WordPress Support Service, including departments within the Universities of Glasgow & Edinburgh. The service involves frequent updates, upgrades to the core software & plugins, identification & resolution of any issues that should arise.

I have extensive experience creating eye catching email newsletter campaigns. My most recent was for a major department within the University of Glasgow.
